Visiting a Fish Farming in Pignans

Our current modes of consumption take us away more and more from the reality of the production of what we eat. This observation encourage lots of us to get closer to producers to understand the cycles of the seasons and the production (which is even directly connected to the cycles of RE-production of animals).

"La Ruche qui dit oui" (The Hive which says yes) is a community that puts buyers in relation to local producers. A hive is under construction in Toulon and in Ollioules.

The opening of the Hive of Toulon is planned for the middle of March and meanwhile Marie-Isabelle and Fabrice, the Persons in charge of the Hive, had the good idea to organize the visit of one of the producers of the Hive; The Fish Farming of Pignans.

During the visit you will discover all the work that is asked to feed our starving mouths!

Krystelle, the manager of the fish farming with her husband Alex, welcomes us with a wide smile! This "little" woman is taking care of the fish farming with her husband since 2007 and explains us in detail all the stages of the life of a trout since the hatching up to our plate! Krystelle and Alex only use organic food and do not produce salmon trout (you will understand later why!).

You will be seized at once by the scale of the tasks this couple handle alone. The major part of their activity is to supply the trouts who serve to populate the rivers of the Var for private fishing, that means 160 000 trouts.

The couple also produces between 15 and 20 tons a year of trouts and 800kg of "salmon of the fountains" which are directly sold on the markets of Lorgues Fridays morning, of Pignans every Sundays morning and in the Fish farming every Thursday afternoon. The price is absolutly reasonable : 10€/kg.

Visits are organized on simple request. If you live around come and see them to discover their passion and if you're visiting the region make sure to plan it during travel! You will learn that the salmon trout (that is sold  more expensively in supermarkets is not a variety of fish but only a "rainbow trout" which consumed artificialy coloured food !!
