How to recognize the real Marseille Soap?

It's summertime, markets are crowded and maybe you will go in one of the many craft markets by night. You will face numerous temptations but maybe swindles too ! The Marseille Soap is a traditional soap made from vegetable oils that has been produced around Marseille, France, for about 600 years.
It's fashionable and it's impossible to miss soap sellers on markets in the region. The trademark is not registrered and that is why everybody can make some soap and put the name Marseille Soap on it.

So how to recognize and buy the REAL Marseille Soap?

Trust your senses ! Here are three tricks :

1) Sens of touch : the real Marseille Soap is a little bit rough and has a "raw" aspect. It contains at least 72 % of vegetable oil (most of the time olive oil) which is stamped on the soap.

2) Eyesight : Its shape is squared most of the time and of neutral color. It is either dark green if it's made with olive oil, or off-white it's made with palm oil or copra (don't be seduced by flashy colors). The manufacturer will take care of stamping his soap with his name and his logo.

3) Sens of smell : The smell of the Marseille Soap is rather neutral. It contains no addition of flavor. So don't be seduced by pleasant but nevertheless chemical smell of fruits or flowers!

You should know that there are less than about ten traditionnal soap makers in the region of Marseille ! Most of them show their factories and sell on line.
